Which shampoo do you use to wash your Dreadlocks?
First the question: which shampoo do you use to wash your Dreadlocks? If you use a shampoo that isn’t meant for dreads and therefore isn’t developed for dreads, you should consider switching to a different shampoo.
Shampoos can leave residue behind that can cause irritation on your scalp. The result? ITCH! A shampoo especially developed for dreads contains the right (natural) ingredients that will nourish your scalp and ease the itch.
Here you can find Dreadshampoos that I recommend and have been tested by me.
How often do you wash your Dreads?
What is your washing routine? Do you wash your Dreadlocks every day, once a week, once a month? It’s important to find a good balance. I don’t recommend to wash your dreads too often. You scalp won’t get the chance to find a good balance and can feel itchy really quickly. I don’t recommend washing your dreads only occasionally either. Washing (with the right shampoo) will help keep your dreads clean and when they’re clean they can mature better.
Of course this is a personal choice for everyone, but the guideline I maintain is to wash your dreads once a week. This is a good guideline for your scalp as well as your dreadlocks.
Rinse the shampoo out of your Dreads thoroughly
After you’ve washed your Dreads, make sure you rinse out the shampoo thoroughly. Residue can cause itch. While rinsing out your dreads in the shower, squeeze the water out of your dreads multiple times, to make sure there’s no shampoo left behind in your Dreadlocks.
When were your Dreadlocks last touched up?
Touching up your dreads will make sure your scalp can ‘breathe’ sufficiently. Every hair is in place and your scalp is clear and feels airy.
When it’s been a while since your dreads were touched up, you’ll probably have a lot of loose hairs at the regrowth. This makes it difficult for your scalp to ‘breathe’ and can result in an itchy feeling.
Here you can find tips and advice for touching up your Dreadlocks:
Change in weather and influence on Dreads
When one season changes into the next, your skin can feel a bit dry. This can also affect your scalp and cause itch. To help your scalp and ease itch you can use a ‘Conditioning Oil’. You can apply this on your Dreadlocks as well as your scalp. You’ll find that this will calm your scalp!
Dry scalp and Dreads
When you have a sensitive or dry scalp it’s important to consider all of the above. In addition your scalp needs some extra care and love! Use a ‘Conditioning Oil’ or a ‘Conditioning/Refreshening Spray’. These products contain oils that give your scalp the love and care it needs!
Goodluck with the care of your Dreadlocks! I hope these tips will help reduce the itch!
