Caring for Your Dreadlocks & Extensions in Autumn

As the days get cooler and the air gets a little drier, our hair often feels the change of season too. Real dreadlocks and dreadlock extensions deserve some extra love in autumn to keep them looking fresh, hydrated and feel comfy.

Whether you’re rocking temporary dreads or real dreadlocks, here are some easy tips to keep your locks happy this season.

1. Keep Your Dreads Hydrated

Autumn air can be crisp and dry, which sometimes leaves dreads feeling a little rough. A lightweight refreshening spray or a few drops of nourishing oil on your scalp can make a big difference. Hydration keeps your dreads soft and prevents scalp itchiness.

2. Adjust Your Wash Routine

In summer, sweat and heat may mean more frequent washing. In autumn, you can often reduce that a little. Washing your dreads once every 1 - 2 weeks with a residue free shampoo will keep them clean without drying them out too much.

3. Protect from Wind & Weather

Windy autumn days can make your dreads frizz up faster. Wrapping your hair in a satin hairwrap or tucking them into a beanie not only looks super cozy but also helps protect your locks. A satin lining is best, it prevents friction and breakage.

4. Show Off Autumn Colors

If you love changing up your look with the seasons, autumn is the perfect time to add warm shades like dark green, maroon or ginger to your dreadlocks. They blend beautifully with cozy sweaters and fall vibes.

You can also add our dreadlock extensions and Locks of Love Braids temporarily to your real dreadlocks. Just a couple can change up your look.

5. Night Care Still Matters

Don’t forget your nighttime routine! Sleeping on a satin pillowcase or in a protective Night Cap helps keep them neat and reduces dryness & frizz while you snooze.

6. Listen to Your Hair & Scalp

Everyone’s hair reacts differently to seasonal changes. If your scalp feels tight, add more hydration. If your dreads feel heavy or frizzy, try protective styles or take a break with updos.

Autumn is all about cozy vibes, colorful looks and feeling good in your own skin (and hair!). With just a few seasonal tweaks, your dreadlocks and extensions will stay healthy, soft and beautiful all season long.
