Curly dreads can give a very different look compared to our straight dreads, and it might be nice to change up your look with the set of Locks of Love that you might have already worn in the straight variant. Especially if your own hair is curly, and you kind of miss your curls while wearing dreads, this could be a fun change!
Be aware that your temporary dreads will not go back to being perfectly straight again after curling them.
When you curl your Synthetic dreadlocks, the curls will gradually sag out a little bit while wearing them. Once you remove the dreads after wearing them 2-3 months, you can recurl them easily to redefine the curls! It’s easiest to curl your dreads before installing them.
Create wavy temporary dreads by braiding them together
One method to curl dreads (and this is our favourite method), is by binding 6 Single ended dreads together, braid them per 2 dreads with the standard braiding technique, all the way to the end. Then pour hot water over the braid, and let it dry completely. Once dry you can unbraid them and you will have wavey/curly dreads! In this video we show how to do this.
This method will result in kind of wavy curls.
If you want to curl your Double ended dreads, you can take 3 dreads, bind them together in the middle, then fold them double, and braid in the same way per 2 dreads.
When you use more dreads in one braid the wave/curl will look a bit different, you can experiment with this to see which look you like!

Curling Locks of Love with curling rods
If you prefer curls that are more like ringlets and really curly, you can use curling rods to twist your dreads around, tie the end of the dread to the rod with an elastic, then pour hot water over it, let dry completely, untwist them, and you have curly dreads,
The bigger the curling rod is in diameter, the bigger the curl will be of course.
Create curls in your real dreads
Do you have real dreadlocks? You can curl them as well by using the same methods explained above! The easiest way to curl your real dreads is to have towel-dry dreads, so still moist but not soaking wet, then braid them or twist around the curling rods and let them dry fully. Unbraid or untwist them and, voila, curly dreads! Once you wash your curly dreads your dreads will be perfectly straight again, so it’s great to try out a different look for a while or curl your dreads for a party!
If a fully curled look is a bit much for you, just curl the ends of your dreads! Or just curl a couple of dreads randomly in your set. This gives them a subtly different look!
