Creating your own Dreadset with Henlon hair
Are you planning to make your own set of dreads with Henlon hair? That’s awesome! It allows you to create your ideal dreads: exactly the colors, length and thickness you want. You can get creative with fun embellishments like yarn, beads, and/or charms, resulting in a super cool, unique set!
Wondering which tools you need to make dreads? Then read this blog post!
We at Dreadshop are happy to share some tips to help give your dreads that extra "wow" factor.
Use multiple shades of Henlon hair
You could, of course, pick a single color of Henlon hair that closely matches your own color for a natural look. However, if you look closely, you’ll notice that your natural hair actually consists of multiple shades (unless it’s been dyed a solid, uniform color). These variations add depth; hair that is a single, flat shade can sometimes look a bit dull.
Similarly, if you use just one color of Henlon hair to make your dreads, the finished set might look a little uninspired.
While you can certainly spruce up your set with colorful yarn, beads, and charms, using a blend of different Henlon shades often makes the dread set look even better!
For instance, you could choose three shades of blonde or brown to create your dreads, or blend two or three shades together to add depth. In fact, all of our "Renate’s Locks of Love" are made by mixing at least two colors! Choosing two similar shades keeps the look safe and natural, but you could also mix a blonde shade with a touch of pink or green for a subtle hint of color.
Is your perfect color somewhere between two existing shades? Simply mix them together!
You can experiment with this by mixing the colors 50/50 or by adding just a small amount of one color to your base shade.

Mix Henlon hair colors by shuffling the hair
Mixing colors sounds great, but how does it work?
Shuffling the hair blends the strands together; it also ensures that the hair tapers nicely at the bottom, rather than all falling at the same length. This results in dreads that taper subtly to a neat, fine point.
So, even if you are using only one color for your dreads, shuffling the hair is a good idea, it prevents your dreads from having blunt ends!
The bundle of hair will be slightly longer after shuffling because the strands are no longer perfectly aligned; they don't all fall at the same length anymore.
Preparing the hair for shuffling
Before you start shuffling, it is important to comb through the hair to remove any tangles, as tangles make the process very difficult. You can use your fingers to comb through it; hold the hair firmly in the middle, begin at the bottom and work your way up until you no longer encounter any tangles.
You can proceed by using a brush, to get the smaller tangles out, though doing so will likely pull out more loose hair out, so you might prefer to stick to just combing with your fingers.
Next, you can begin shuffling. Is this your first time? If so, it might be helpful to start with a smaller strand of hair rather than a full bundle. Henlon hair tangles quite easily, meaning you might accidentally create new tangles while shuffling; working with a smaller section gives you better control over this. If you do pull a tangle into the hair, stop pulling the two strands apart and try to gently pull the tangle out starting from the bottom.
You repeatedly split the hair in two, pull the halves apart, and place one half back on top of the other but position the top section slightly higher up so that the hair extends a little further at one end.
Keep shuffling until the colors are fully blended and you can no longer distinguish between the two individual colors, or shuffle only slightly if you want the individual colors to remain visible when you make the dreads.
If you shuffle for a long time, the tips will taper to become increasingly thin. Experiment to see what look you prefer.
Shuffle with Ombré Henlon hair
You might have noticed that Dreadshop also offers Henlon hair in two-tone shades: Ombré Henlon hair.
You can also blend these amazing colors; try blending a slightly lighter or darker ‘solid’ Henlon shade with the Ombré hair to tweak the overall tone!
