Making dreadlocks with Henlon hair: which technique is best?
Our synthetic Henlon hair without chemical coating is of the best quality and perfectly suited for making dreadlocks using the crochet hook method. Because the hair is smooth and feels soft, it is absolutely perfect if you want to finish your dreads with a nice loose tip. However, a blunt end is also an option for a more edgy look!
Crocheted dreads are of good quality and last a very long time. Compared to dreads made using a twist and seal method with heat / hot water, crocheted dreads stay beautiful and in shape much longer and are sturdier. Moreover, the dreads look much more like real dreads! It is not without reason that our Renate’s Locks of Love are made from Henlon hair using a crochet hook method; you can have them re-installed an infinite number of times and they will stay beautiful!
Henlon hair, how many bundles do I need?
To create dreads for a full head, you need 5-7 bundles of hair.
The exact amount depends on how thick/thin your own hair is, how much volume you want, and how long you want to make your dreads.
If you have very thick hair, you will need more dreads and therefore more Henlon hair, because your hair can support more weight. If you have very thin hair, your hair can support less weight, so you will need fewer dreads and want to make the dreads a bit thinner. After all, the goal is for your dread set to be comfortable to wear and for your hair to remain healthy!

Which tools do I need?
To transform Henlon hair into dreadlocks, you need a number of tools.
Tool number 1: Comb
First, a teasing comb. You use this comb to tease the Henlon hair before you start crocheting it. An important part of making beautiful dreads and therefore an indispensable tool!

Tool number 2: Crochet Hook
After you have teased the hair with the teasing comb, you use the crochet hook to crochet the hair so that it becomes a dread.
Dreadshop has a number of different crochet hooks with a comfortable handle in its assortment; the 0.75mm crochet hooks are best suited for making dreadlocks with Henlon hair.
We have this size crochet hook in 3 versions: with 1, 2 and 3 needles. When making fairly thick dreads, 1 cm or thicker, it can be nice to choose 2 or 3 needles. Are you making dreads thinner than 1 cm? Then we recommend the crochet hook with 1 needle. First time making dreads? We recommend using the hook with 1 needle!
Of course, it is also nice if you can secure the strand of Henlon hair to something so that you don't have to worry about the strand of hair coming loose or falling on the floor. For this, you can use a clamp / market clamp, for example, where you simply clamp the strand of hair between them on your table.
Or another clamp where you can bind the hair around.
