Synthetic Henlon Hair vs Human Hair

Want to get real dreadlocks made from your own hair? That’s awesome! But what to do if your own hair is still quite short and you'd love long dreadlocks with lots of styling options right away?  You can choose to have your dreadlocks extended!
By using loose hair and not ready made dreadlock extensions, we can match the thickness of your dreadlocks & colors beautifully.
In this blog, we discuss the difference between extending real dreadlocks with Human Hair and Henlon Hair.

Extending Real Dreadlocks with Henlon Hair

In addition to Human Hair, we also have an extensive selection of Henlon Hair and Ombré Henlon Hair. While it's often used to create temporary dreadlock extensions you can braid into your own hair, you can also use the synthetic hair to extend your real dreadlocks.

Advantages:

  • A very extensive color selection, including non-natural colors
  • Extra long length of 60 cm / 23.6 inch when folded in half (so a single length of 120 cm / 47 inch), allowing them to easily be extended to a very long length
  • Perfect if you want your extensions (all of them or just a few) in a cheerful color; Henlon is colorfast (does not fade compared to non-natural colors in dyed human hair)
  • Color shades can be mixed for even more color nuances
  • Perfectly suitable if you have a limited budget; Henlon hair is priced much lower compared to human hair
  • The extensions will dry somewhat faster after washing because they do not become more compact as you wear them longer, unlike dreads made from your own hair/human hair extensions
  • Our Henlon hair has no chemical coating; most synthetic hair has such a coating.

Disadvantages:

  • Henlon hair is made from synthetic fibers, which means it does not change or mature the way natural dreadlocks do. Your own dreads will continue to compact and develop over time, while Henlon extensions will stay in the same shape and texture.
Because of this, the two can gradually start to look different from each other. If your natural dreads develop loops, bumps, or a more textured finish over time, the contrast with the smoother Henlon extensions may become more visible. Regular maintenance such as palm rolling can help your own dreads stay more compact, but natural variation will still occur over time.
  • Fuller ends are less nice and practical with Henlon Hair. This hair is stiffer, will tangle much faster and is difficult to keep fully, loose and looking nice.

Extending Real Dreads with Loose Human Hair

At the Dreadshop Salon, we usually use loose Human Hair to extend dreads. Using loose human hair provides the most beautiful natural effect. That is why most clients choose this option.

Advantages:

  • By mixing different shades of human hair, you can match almost any natural hair color, ensuring the extensions blend beautifully with your own hair color.
  • Any desired extension length is possible.
  • Fuller ends can be created beautifully with human hair, giving a soft texture and a natural wave.
  • Human hair extensions can be dyed in non-natural colors. It is best to start with a light blonde as base for extending. After the dreads are created, you can dye the extensions in any desired color. Keep in mind that bright colors may not take as intensely as they would on freshly bleached hair, since the human hair used for extensions has already been processed. The final result may therefore differ from dyed natural hair.
  • The extensions with loose human hair will ‘mature’ and change, just like the dreadlocks made from your own hair. However, the extensions will mature and become compact a little faster and you will have slightly fewer loose hairs compared to the (new) dreadlocks made from your own hair.
  • The result looks super natural.
  • An ombré color extension is also possible: choose hair shades slightly lighter than your own hair.

Disadvantages:

  • Do you want to add a lot of length? Then extending the dreads will take a bit longer, as Dreadshop’s Human Hair comes in 50 cm lengths. Some length is lost during attachment and the dreading process itself. For very long extensions, multiple bundles of hair may need to be added to reach the desired result.
  • Only natural colors available
  • Human hair is more expensive compared to Henlon hair
