Damaged hair: Is it a good idea to wear synthetic dreadlocks?

A common question while wearing Synthetic Dreadlocks: isn’t it harmful to your hair?!
The answer is simply: no!
In fact, if you have your dreadlocks installed by a professional, you can even consider Synthetic Dreads as a protective hairstyle

Protective hairstyle

Not for nothing is wearing dreads called a “protective hairstyle”.
Especially if normally, while not wearing dreads, you use a lot of products in your hair to style it; e.g. wash your hair everyday and comb (knots out of your hair); touch your hair a lot with your hands; or use a hair straightener regularly to style it.

When you have Synthetic Locks of Love braided in, you actually "leave your own hair alone” because:

  • You do not need to use a hair straightener because with dreads your hair is always looking good ;)
  • You use fewer styling products, only products specifically to care for your dreads, and the 2 Dreadshop-approved dread care brands: RAW ROOTs and Dollylocks, contain only natural, organic and plant-based ingredients and are free of sulfate and parabens.
  • When wearing synthetic dreads, it is not necessary to wash your hair very often, once a week is sufficient. In fact, washing your hair every day is not very good for your normal hair anyway and is often not necessary.
  • You can't comb your hair, and so you don't have to comb out hair-knots ( which may not always be done with proper care, especially if you're in a hurry in the morning ;))

In short: your hair can actually just relax while wearing dreadlocks!

If your hair is damaged, e.g. by bleaching or other reasons, it can be a nice change for your hair to have synthetic dreads braided in.
If your hair is in really bad shape and is too damaged, it may not be a good idea to braid dreads in. After all, you are putting extra weight on your hair. If you are in doubt about this, consult your hairdresser/dread stylist!!

Go to a professional Salon

It is very important not to overload your hair with too heavy / too long dreads, braid them/ have them braided too tightly, or make the sections much too small so that there is still too much weight on your hair and your hair suffers even more or in some cases, can even break off!

That’s why it’s so important to go to a professional salon to have your dreads braided, or if you want to braid your dreads yourself, you can take our course in which you will learn to braid your dreads yourself properly.

Are you going to take your dreads out after using them for several months? Then it's also good to do this the right way so you don't damage your hair when taking out the Dreadlocks. In this blog you can read all about removing your dreads.

In addition, it is important (if you want to wear your dreads again), to give your hair and scalp at least a week of rest before installing/ having the dreads installed again.

Customer experiences

Regularly we hear from our Salon clients that they are amazed at how healthy their hair looks and feels after wearing and taking out their Synthetic Locks of Love for several months.

So wearing Synthetic dreads can be a perfect temporary hairstyle until your hair has recovered a bit, but beware: dreads can be addictive! ;)
